Flow Meter with Pressure Gauge Combos: Dual-Parameter Monitoring Skids for Hydraulic Diagnostics

Quick Answer

A flow meter with pressure gauge combo is a pre-assembled skid that measures flow rate and pressure at the same time. Silver Automation Instruments builds these skids with oval gear flow meters, vortex flow meters, and pressure transmitters for hydraulic test benches, power units, and field troubleshooting. You get one panel, one wiring point, and one calibration sheet.

Why Single Parameter Readings Mislead Hydraulic Diagnostics

Most hydraulic failures show up as a drop in flow or a change in pressure. A pressure gauge alone cannot tell you if the flow dropped because of valve leakage or pump wear. A flow meter alone cannot tell you if backpressure is too high. The combination gives both values on the same test point.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A hydraulic service shop in Balikpapan, Indonesia replaced two pumps before checking return line flow. The real problem was a stuck relief valve dumping flow at 180 bar. A dual-parameter skid would have shown the pressure event and the flow drop in the same minute.

What Actually Ships in the Skid

A typical Silver Instruments dual-parameter skid includes an oval gear flow meter or a vortex flow meter, a pressure transmitter, a direct-reading pressure gauge, isolation valves, and a pressure snubber. The flow meter sits inline on the main return line or on a bypass loop. The pressure transmitter taps into the same manifold. For hydraulic oil flow meter with pressure gauge applications, the skid is often installed on a test bench or a service cart.

Common pipe sizes are DN15, DN20, DN25, and DN40. Flow ranges span 0.2 to 120 L/min for hydraulic oil at 46 cSt. Pressure ranges cover 0 to 16 bar for return-line checks, 0 to 250 bar for pump testing, and 0 to 600 bar for high-pressure diagnostics.

Standard outputs are 4-20 mA, pulse, and RS485 Modbus. HART is an option. The pressure gauge can be silicone filled for high vibration. The frame is stainless steel 304 or anodised aluminium.

Recommended Model Pairings

For return-line flow and low-pressure checks use a SI-OG-15 oval gear flow meter with a 0 to 16 bar pressure gauge. For pump test benches use a SI-OG-25 oval gear flow meter with a SI-PT-250 pressure transmitter. For high flow and dirty oil use a SI-VF-40 vortex flow meter with a SI-PT-600 pressure transmitter.

These flow meters work with ISO VG 32, VG 46, VG 68, and VG 100 hydraulic oils. The oval gear meters handle viscosity from 1 cSt to 1000 cSt. Vortex meters need a minimum Reynolds number. We select oval gear meters below DN40 and vortex meters at DN50 and larger for most hydraulic oil applications.

A paperless recorder can log flow, pressure, and optional PT100 temperature data during extended tests. Silver Instruments supplies a 16 channel recorder with USB export.

hat Matter

Do not install the flow meter directly after a pump outlet without a straight run. For vortex flow meters use 10 pipe diameters upstream and 5 downstream. Oval gear meters are less sensitive but still need a strainer upstream to protect the gears.

The pressure transmitter needs a snubber to protect the sensor from pressure spikes. Hydraulic systems can spike at 1.5 times rated pressure when valves close quickly. We include that in the skid.

Because the skid is pre-wired and pressure tested, commissioning takes less than one hour. Most engineers skip the wiring part. We have seen many field installations fail because of poor grounding or missing snubbers.

Hazardous Area Versions

Hydraulic diagnostics sometimes happen inside refineries, LNG plants, or offshore platforms. Silver Instruments can supply the flow meter and pressure transmitter with ATEX Zone 1 or IECEx certification. The skid uses flameproof enclosures and intrinsic safety barriers where needed.

A customer in Dammam, Saudi Arabia ordered a DN25 oval gear flow meter with a 0 to 400 bar pressure transmitter for a hydraulic power unit on a drilling rig. That skid had 4-20 mA HART outputs for both flow and pressure. The signals went to a Silver Instruments paperless recorder.

FAQ

What flow range can these combos measure?

We build skids from 0.02 L/min to 600 L/min depending on pipe size and fluid viscosity. Tell us the minimum and maximum flow rate. We recommend a flow meter size that keeps the flow rate between 20 and 80 percent of full scale.

Can I use these skids with hydraulic oil at high viscosity?

Yes. Oval gear flow meters work well from 1 cSt to 1000 cSt. For ISO VG 68 or VG 100 hydraulic oil we normally select oval gear meters below DN40 and vortex meters at DN50 and larger.

What output signals do the flow meter and pressure gauge support?

Standard outputs are 4-20 mA, pulse, and RS485 Modbus. HART is available on request. The pressure transmitter can be a 2 wire 4-20 mA loop powered unit. The flow meter can send pulse to a PLC or a paperless recorder.

Can you build the skid for ATEX Zone 1?

Yes. We supply ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 versions. You need to specify the gas group and temperature class. Most hydraulic oil applications use IIB T4. We also supply IECEx certification for marine and offshore projects.

What information do you need for a quote?

Send us your pressure range in bar, temperature in Celsius, pipe size in DN, flow range in liters per minute, and fluid type. Also tell us if you need ATEX certification, HART output, or RS485 Modbus. That is enough for a complete quotation.
