1 1/2 Inch Pool Flow Meter: One and a Half Inch Swimming Turnover Indicators
Quick Answer
A 1 1/2 inch pool flow meter fits DN40 pipe and works for most plunge pools, spa balance tanks, and medium commercial circulation loops. It measures live flow rate so you can calculate turnover time without estimates. For chlorinated or salt water, select an electromagnetic meter with PTFE liner and 316L electrodes.
Why Turnover Indicators Matter
Pool turnover tells you how many times the total water volume passes through filtration in a set period. Many health codes for commercial pools require a turnover of 4 to 6 hours. To verify that, you need the actual flow rate in m3/h or L/min. A pump curve alone is not enough because the sand filter, pipe fittings, heater, and valves add pressure drop.
We have seen this on customer sites many times. A hotel pool in Da Nang had a pump designed for 18 m3/h. The installed 1 1/2 inch meter showed 11 m3/h after the filter loading increased. That gap meant the turnover was closer to 8 hours. The operator cleaned the sand filter and brought the flow back to the target.
Size and Flow Range for a DN40 Pool Line
A 1 1/2 inch pool flow meter is normally the same as DN40. In PVC pool pipe, the actual inner diameter changes with pressure class. At 1.5 m/s water velocity, a DN40 pipe passes about 108 L/min. At 2.5 m/s, the flow is about 180 L/min. A useful measuring range for this size is 80 to 250 L/min or 4.8 to 15 m3/h.
For most pool applications, we recommend the Silver Instruments MAG 2000 electromagnetic flow meter. It has a PTFE liner, 316L electrodes, IP67 housing, and 0.5 percent accuracy. It outputs 4 to 20 mA plus pulse. This model works well when the pool water conductivity is above 20 µS/cm.
Material Selection for Chlorinated and Salt Pools
Pool water contains chlorine, bromine in some spas, and salt in salt chlorinated systems. Cheap wetted parts can fail fast in this service. A paddle wheel may work for a while in fresh water. In salt water near 3500 ppm, the bearing can swell and the reading drifts.
Silver Instruments pool flow meters use EPDM or PTFE liner. For salt pools, choose PTFE. Use 316L electrodes as the standard. If the pool uses a strong acid dosing or hydrogen peroxide system, tell us before quoting. We can check compatibility with the chemical type and concentration.
Installation Position and Pipe Run
Place the meter downstream of the filter and before the heater or dosing point. Keep the sensor full of water at all times. A partially full pipe gives unstable readings. The meter should not sit

Straight pipe requirements are 5D upstream and 2D downstream. For DN40, that is 200 mm upstream and 80 mm downstream based on a 40 mm inner diameter. In practice, many pool equipment rooms are tight. Send us a photo of the pipe layout if you have a short run. We can adjust damping or mounting recommendations.
Control Panel Outputs
Most commercial pool controllers accept 4 to 20 mA, pulse, or RS485. The MAG 2000 can be configured with 4 to 20 mA and Modbus RTU. We set the flow range before dispatch. Give us the pool volume and turnover target. For example, a 20 m3 pool with a 6 hour turnover needs about 3.3 m3/h or 55 L/min. A 1 1/2 inch meter handles this easily.
Because the signal type matters, tell us the controller brand and input spec. We can match it. Some systems prefer a pulse per liter. Others use a 4 to 20 mA signal scaled in the controller. Both are possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1 1/2 inch the same as DN40?
Yes. For flow meter sizing, 1 1/2 inch nominal bore matches DN40. Always confirm the actual pipe inner diameter before purchase because PVC schedules can vary.
Can this meter be used in a salt water pool?
Yes. Choose PTFE liner and 316L electrodes. For very aggressive water, titanium electrodes are an option. Send us the salt level and disinfectant type.
What flow range should be set for a 1 1/2 inch line?
Normally set 0 to 200 L/min or 0 to 12 m3/h. Some customers use 0 to 15 m3/h. The operating point should stay between 30 and 90 percent of the range.
Does Silver Instruments supply spare parts?
Yes. We keep standard liners, electrodes, and electronics for common models. For pool meters installed in remote resorts, we can arrange express spare parts to Australia, UAE, or Vietnam.
Can the meter show turnover time directly?
Not directly. Turnover time is a calculation. Divide pool volume by live flow rate. The meter can show flow rate and total flow. Some controllers can calculate turnover from the 4 to 20 mA signal.
How to Get a Quote
Send us your pipe size, pool volume, turnover target, and disinfection method. That is enough for sizing. If the pool is heated above 40 °C or uses geothermal water, include temperature and pressure.
